Responsibility for standards lies with the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), part of the Ministry of Industry. Established in 1969, TISI not only leads standardisation in Thailand, but also acts as a designated foreign inspection body for JIS Japan, VDE Germany, and other countries.

Four bodies have responsibility for accreditation. The National Accreditation Council of Thailand (NAC) and the Thai Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (TLAS/TISI), are both part of TISI, while the Bureau of Laboratory Accreditation (BLA-DSS) and the Bureau of Laboratory Quality Standards (BLQS-DMSc) are part of the Department of Science Service and the Department of Medical Sciences respectively.

NAC accredits certification bodies, whereas TLAS/TISI accredits testing and calibration laboratories. BLA-DSS accredits physical, chemical and biological testing laboratories. BLQS-DMSc was established in 1997 to accredit testing laboratories for medical and health products.

The national legal metrology body is the Central Bureau of Weights and Measures (CBWM). However, at the international level Thailand is represented by CBWM's parent, the Department of Internal Trade of the Ministry of Commerce (DIT/MoC). At the regional level Thailand is represented by a different department of the MoC, the Department of Commercial Registration^* (DCR/MoC).

Scientific metrology is the responsibility of the National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT)^§. NIMT was established in 1998, and is already active in international comparisons and in the CIPM MRA.
