In Canada standards and accreditation are the responsibility of the Standards Council of Canada. The SCC is a federal Crown corporation, established by statute in 1970. Accreditation for environmental testing falls within the remit of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation Inc (CALA). This is the new name (from June 2008) for an organisation previously know as the Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories (CAEAL)

Legal metrology is the responsibility of Measurement Canada (MC), created as agency within Industry Canada in 1999 from the groups responsible for Electricity & Gas and Weights & Measures.

The National Research Council Institute for National Measurement Standards (NRC-INMS) is responsible for the bulk of scientific metrology within Canada^*. The NRC is a governmental organisation, founded in 1916.

* The exception is TCC (a private company recognised by the NRC) for flow.
