The Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) - commonly known as Standards Malaysia - is responsible for both Malaysian standards and accreditation. DSM is a department of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, established by statute in 1996.
DSM has appointed SIRIM Berhad (a company wholly-owned by the Malaysian government) as the sole national standards development agency. This is undertaken at SIRIM by the Standards Management Department.
Another department of SIRIM Berhad is also responsible for legal and scientific metrology: the National Metrology Laboratory (NML-SIRIM), operating under a 1972 statute. Another organisation, Nuclear Malaysia, is responsible for ionising radiation metrology.
