The two national standards bodies in Germany are Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) and Verband der Elektrotechnik Elektronic Informationstechnik e.V. (VDE). DIN is the sole representative on ISO, but for electrical standards the IEC representative is DKE, which is a joint organisation of DIN and VDE. Responsibility for running DKE lies with VDE.
The Deutscher Akkreditierungs Rat (DAR) or Accreditation Council has coordinated all German activities in the field of accreditation since 1991. The Council consists of accreditation bodies and representatives from government and German industry.
Both legal and scientific metrology are the responsibility of Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)*. Created in 1950 from the PTR (itself established in 1887), PTB is accountable to the Federal Ministry of Economics.
* Except for metrology in chemistry, which PTB shares with three other labs: BAM, BVL, and UBA.
