How to use MTDATA

Training Courses

NPL holds training courses about use of MTDATA at regular intervals throughout the year, both at NPL and,
by arrangement, away from the NPL site. Various courses are offered, each covering different aspects of the use of MTDATA. The following pages give more details about what is included in each course:
The next Introductory course will be held at NPL on 19-20 July 2010 at NPL. Dates of future courses will be shown on the News page.

This course has been endorsed by the Institute of Physics (IOP):
  • If you are a member of the IOP, you will receive a 10% discount on the course fee
  • CPD points will be awarded on this course at a rate of 3 per hour

NPL also supplies comprehensive documentation about how to use MTDATA. Much of this information is available from within the program itself via the Windows help file for WinMT, or by using the "?" mark facility within the character interface.
Microsoft VISTA users should note that MicroSoft no longer includes within Vista the Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program used to display the help file used by WinMT. This program may however be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

Detailed information about the use of WinMT may also be obtained from this web site or you can also view a non-technical demonstration on how to use this version of MTDATA.

Help about using the classical character interface versions of MTDATA can be obtained either by downloading the manuals from the ftp site and perusing them at your leisure or by following their web based equivalents which will gradually include and update all the content from the manuals. There is also a series of examples showing in detail how MTDATA can be used in a number of areas of technological interest.

MTDATA Users Group

The MTDATA Users Group is a club for current and prospective users of MTDATA. There is an annual meeting held at NPL, in November, during which users are able to meet each other and hear about new features and future development plans.
The meeting generally features talks from NPL staff about the latest MTDATA developments and future plans plus presentations from industrial and academic users illustrating the practical applications of MTDATA. There is no membership fee but a small charge is made for attending a Users Group meeting.

Teaching Thermodynamics

The teaching of thermodynamics and phase equilibria in Materials Science and Engineering degree courses is becoming less popular than was previously the case despite remarkable advances over the last thirty years in computer software and databases which apply thermodynamic principles to calculate phase equilibria and provide real insight into complex industrial processes involving many different elements and phases. The problem is that students quickly become disillusioned as a result of the large number of equations and proofs without obvious practical application involved in traditional thermodynamics teaching. This has been highlighted in a recent editorial in J. Phase Equilibria by Fred Hayes (UMIST).

As a result of this course materials have been developed jointly between the National Physical Laboratory and Dr Fred Hayes to help people teaching thermodynamics make use of phase equilibrium calculation software and databases in stimulating interest and an appreciation of the relevance of thermodynamics in their students. Use as part of continuing professional development schemes in industry is also envisaged. Where possible principles have been illustrated by means of calculations for real rather than idealised systems undertaken using MTDATA developed at the UK National Physical Laboratory.
